Guys are having some trouble reading. The U.S. Department of Education reading tests for the last 30 years show boys scoring lower than girls in every age group, every year. In order to get guys reading, author Jon Scieszka has founded a website that gives boys a chance to discover books that they’ll like and bring some attention to this issue.
Guysread.com has a Book of the Month section, lists of books grouped by interest (“Scary,” “Outer space, but without aliens,” and “At least one explosion” are some of my favorites), and has instructions for how to start your own Guys Read book club.
On September 20th, the New Lenox Library will have its own Guys Read book club. The program will kick off with Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to Not Reading by Tom Greenwald. Stop in today to register for the program and get your copy. Let’s show the world that guys DO read.
